Abstract: |
In 2012, a total of twelve transects measuring between 150m to 500m were undertaken using a manual gouge auger across the DA (Illus 1). Transects covered areas that borehole data indicated had <0.5m of Made Ground present at the top of the sedimentary sequence (Geotechnical Engineering Ltd 2009). This would enable the gouge auger to penetrate through the sediments.
A total of fifty-six auger points (APs) were undertaken from all transects. The sedimentary sequence was recorded at each location. All of the auger points were then leveled through
survey in the field, with a differential GPS to record their position and the OD heights of the current ground surface.
In Compound 3, A total of eight auger points (AP1 – AP8) were undertaken and the sedimentary sequence was recorded at each location. All of the auger points were then levelled through survey in the field, with a differential GPS to record their position and the OD heights of the current ground surface.
Bulk samples were taken from the basal and upper peat layers encountered through the digging of a sondage, 1.8 x 0.9m and some 3m deep, at the west end of Trench 4. This provided the opportunity to assess the plant macrofossils in order to gain a better understanding of the nature of the peat.
The core samples were retrieved using a piston corer. The samples were taken from the area of Turbine T29 in the northern part of the development area, located near auger point AP4 and at Turbine T5 to the south, located near AP22.
All turbine locations were visited during the 16th and 17th May. The stage of construction at each location was recorded, as well as the presence of peat and fossil wood in spoil heaps and/or exposed in situ in open cuts. A few samples of the fossil wood were taken from
spoil heaps and in situ deposits. The stages of construction were grouped into five levels:
Stage 1 Turbine base pit excavated and levelled. Construction of concrete turbine base not started
Stage 2 Turbine base pit excavated and levelled. Concrete turbine base at various stages of construction
Stage 3 Turbine base built and pit backfilled
Stage 4 Turbine base built and pit backfilled, hard standing excavated
Stage 5 Turbine base built and pit backfilled, hard standing backfilled
Due to the high water table it was only possible to reach former ground surfaces in areas where the top of the peat lay close to the surface. The Phase I programme of work indicated that this would only be feasible at Turbines T37, T38 and T39 and in the area to the east of test pit WS08. Three 30 x 2m trenches, representing roughly a 5% sample of each turbine base and crane-pad, were investigated at Turbines T37, T38 and T39. A 60 x 2m trench was excavated to the east of test pit WS08 along the line of auger points AP4i – AP4. The fieldwork and recording was undertaken in accordance with the procedures set out in the original WSI (Headland Archaeology 2012).
In 2013, machine excavation was undertaken using a 360° mechanical excavator equipped with a flat bladed ditching bucket, operating under continuous archaeological supervision. On completion of machine excavation, all faces of the trench that required examination or recording were cleaned using appropriate hand tools. The stratigraphic sequence was recorded in full in each of the trenches. |
