Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Bloor Homes to unertake a magnetometer survey over 30ha of land at Hunter's Moon, Easton Lane near Chippenham, Wiltshire. Of the entire site, only 23ha was suitable for rapid recorded gradiometer scanning to establish an intial assessment of areas of archaeological potential. A further 5.7ha were identified and covered through detailed gradiometer survey. A number of anomalies of probable archaeological interest were identified, although the majority of these features were consistent with former field boundaries. Possible former tracks, ditches and trends consistent with agricultural ploughing were also seen across the survey area. Several regions of increased response and magentic disturbance are probably related to agricultural activities associated witht he modern farm. These results were used to inform a subsequent trial trench evaluation of the site, the outcome of which are contained within a seperate report. The evaluation within the land at Hunters Moon was successful in its stated aims and has indicated a low to moderate archaeological potential within the Site, despite its location within a relatively rich archaeological landscape.
The trial trenching evaluation confirmed the presence of a low background of small scattered clusters of archaeological features such as pits, possible postholes and boundary ditches, largely located along the southern, south-eastern and central areas of the site. The boundary ditches are likely to be post-medieval or later and appear to have formed part of the existing field boundary system.
Although the majority of the pits and postholes were undated, one pit at the southeastern edge of the site contained later prehistoric and Romano-British pottery. A small quantity of prehistoric worked flint was also recovered. It appears likely that these features and recovered finds are likely to be related to low level fringe activity within the site which is associated with a concentrated group of Neolithic material, Bronze Age barrows and Iron Age/Romano-British settlement previously found immediately to the east of the Site. |
