Abstract: |
The archaeological evaluation of the former Barrow police station site comprised three trenches. Two linear features which probably related to the construction of the police station in 1958 and a shallow irregular pit containing late 19th to early 20th century domestic rubbish and industrial residue were encountered in the courtyard to the north-east in Trench 1; a large linear feature, perhaps related to a road shown on early maps of the area, filled almost the entirety of Trench 2 beneath the parade yard to the south-west; and a haematite-rich deposit which presumably derived from an early 19th century ore yard nearby was revealed along the south-east side of the magistrates court at the north-east end of Trench 3. Despite the construction of the police station, there were still earlier, 19th century deposits surviving on parts of the site. |
