Abstract:
These reports present the results of four phases of work that were carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) for a residential development at Land at Mount Sandford, Landkey, North Devon, Devon. The first phase of work comprised an archaeological assessment, a geophysical survey, and archaeological evaluation trenching. The archaeological assessment was carried out in accordance with the Standards and Guidance for Historic Environment Desk-Based Assessment (CIfA 2017). The geophysical survey was carried out in accordance with the guidance that is outlined in Geophysical Survey in Archaeological Field Evaluation (English Heritage 2008) and Standard and Guidance for Archaeological Geophysical Survey (CIfA 2014). The archaeological evaluation trenching was carried out in accordance with a Written Scheme of Investigation (Boyd 2017) that was drawn up in line with best practice. The second phase of work comprised a geophysical survey and archaeological evaluation trenching. The geophysical survey was carried out in accordance with the guidance that is outlined in Geophysical Survey in Archaeological Field Evaluation (English Heritage 2008) and Standard and Guidance for Archaeological Geophysical Survey (CIfA 2014). The archaeological evaluation trenching was carried out in accordance with a Written Scheme of Investigation (Boyd 2017) that was drawn up in consultation with Stephen Reed (DCHET) and in line with best practice. The third phase of work comprised a geophysical survey and archaeological evaluation trenching. The fourth phase of work comprised an archaeological excavation. The archaeological excavation was carried out in accordance with a Written Scheme of Investigation (Boyd 2017) that was drawn up in consultation with the Local Planning Authority and in line with best practice. The first phase of works comprised an archaeological assessment, a geophysical survey, and archaeological evaluation trenching. The results of the geophysical survey indicated: the presence of ditches that are associated with drainage or with shallow ground disturbance that may not survive below the topsoil; and the presence of boundaries that may represent former parts of the existing field system. The archaeological evaluation trenching comprised five trenches that contained a total of 12 features. The archaeological evaluation trenching identified: six ditches; five gullies (three of which were termini); and one post hole. The majority of the features were concentrated in Trench 01, with Trench 02 being empty of features. The majority of the datable ditches were Post Medieval to Modern in date. The majority of the features were undated, however they are likely to be Post Medieval to Modern in date given their similarities to the dated features. The majority of the features appear to represent probable historic field boundaries. The second phase of works comprised a geophysical survey and archaeological evaluation trenching. The results of the geophysical survey identified 22 groups of anomalies, the most significant of which was the rectilinear feature within Field 01 that may relate to a previous structure on the site. Many of the anomalies within Field 03 appear to relate to historical agricultural activity and there are also a number of discrete features of unknown archaeological origin or date across the three surveyed fields.
