Abstract:
This report presents the results of a historic building recording that was carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) for the conversion of two redundant barns to form a dwelling and ancillary accommodation with associated track at Westmoor Barns, St. Buryan, Penzance, Cornwall. The historic building recording followed the guidance that is outlined in: Standard and Guidance for the Archaeological Investigation and Recording of Standing Buildings or Structures (CIfA 2014); and Understanding Historic Buildings: A Guide to Good Recording Processes (Historic England 2016). The farm buildings at Westmoor Farm were progressively modified over the course of the 19th century and they reflect the diversity of specialised buildings that came to be seen as necessary on a modern and efficient 19th century farm. The earlier structures were either demolished and replaced or they were modified as needs required. It is likely that the main linear range was heavily altered for this purpose, replacing a low and single-storey croft of traditional build to a multi-functional barn. It is clear that the site has had mixed usage. The farmstead had reached its maximum extent by 1906, likely entering a phase of abandonment during the early to mid 20th century, and only one new building was constructed after this date. It was then occupied by a single off-grid occupant during the later 20th century who remodelled elements of the site to accommodate off-grid living. The site has since been largely neglected. The farmstead at Westmoor Farm can trace its origins to the mid-18th century, however little evidence of this survives today aside from a heavier build to the base of B1 that uses a more vernacular and traditional stonework.
