Abstract:
This report presents the results of a geophysical survey that was carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) for a burial facility at Churchyard Extension, St Michael's Church, St Michael Caerhays, Cornwall. The geophysical survey identified two groups of anomalies on the site and 21 groups of approximately 33 anomalies across the geophysical survey area as a whole. From the identified groups of anomalies one could infer that the site is located in an area of multiple phases of enclosure or drainage activity that could be associated with agricultural works or with a former lann and with a potentially earlier religious site or settlement. The results of the geophysical survey are indicative of a very high archaeological potential for the wider geophysical survey area, however the site of the proposed churchyard extension is the quietest part of the geophysical survey data and it would appear to have a much lower archaeological potential.
