Abstract:
This report presents the results of archaeological monitoring and recording that was carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. (SWARCH) for a residential development at Land East of Greenbank, Connor Downs, Gwinear-Gwithian, Cornwall. The work was carried out in accordance with a Written Scheme of Investigation (Boyd 2021) that was drawn up in consultation with Cornwall County Council to fulfil Condition 6 of planning permission PA19/00988. An area of c.0.9ha in extent was stripped of topsoil by a 21t 360° tracked mechanical excavator that was served by a tractor with a 14t trailer. The work took place under archaeological supervision. The topsoil was a dry friable light buff grey-brown slightly sandy silt loam c.0.3m thick (maximum). The topsoil overlay the natural substrate, a compact to hard mid pinkish-brown weathered shillet. The upper surface of the natural was scored by numerous plough scars that were orientated roughly east-to-west and that ran parallel to the long axis of the field. The only features that were identified were two modern service trenches that were filled with pink shillet or gravel and two geotechnical pits. The finds that were recovered from the topsoil included: 6x sherds (35g) of industrial whitewares; 1x broken screwdriver (73g); 1x twist-on galvanised wire (12g); 1x small plastic pellet (<1g); and 1x semi-translucent soft plastic ball or float (43g). All finds were subsequently discarded.
