Abstract:
Greenlane Archaeology recorded three buildings at Cautley Farm, Whassett to Historic England Level-3 type standards. The tithe map of 1839 shows three buildings on the site, although two only took their present form by the end of the 19th century. Of the three buildings the earliest is probably the central one, which was constructed as a variant bank barn in the 18th or early 19th century, and the two other buildings were probably built shortly thereafter. The one to the west was a small dwelling, probably for itinerant farm labourers, while the one to the east was either a shippon or stables. The bank barn and dwelling saw a number of alterations during the late 19th and 20th century, the former being subject to considerable rebuilding along the east end of the south wall, probably due to structural problems, and some internal reorganisation as well as the trusses being replaced. The dwelling was extended to the west and was later converted to provide additional animal housing.
