Abstract: |
Greenlane Archaeology produced a heritage assessment following the submission of retrospective planning applications for the creation of an al fresco dining area adjacent to the Abbey House Hotel, Barrow-in-Furness. The hotel, which is Grade II* Listed, is located within the precinct of Furness Abbey, which was established in 1127 and became one of the most powerful monastic houses in the country. However, the site is likely to have been disturbed by previous work relating to the construction of Abbey House in 1914; the dining area was constructed in part of the grounds which was terraced as part of the construction of the hotel and disturbed by the creation of services, which are shown on the original plans for the hotel dated 1913 and 1914. In addition, any groundworks associated with the new development are likely to be of limited depth, so the impact on any surviving archaeological remains is likely to be minimal. |
