Abstract:
Following a previous desk-based assessment and geophysical survey prior to the construction of a housing estate, a large area containing a known cropmark was subject to archaeological strip and record. The cropmark is recorded in an aerial photograph taken in 1955 and was also picked up by the geophysical survey in 2014. The feature survived as an L-shaped ditch extending outside of the current site (it originally formed part of a larger enclosure, part of which was built over in the late 20th century). The ditch contained a range of finds of Roman date, primarily 2nd to 4th century, including animal bone, tile (both roof and hypocaust) and pottery, and was associated with an area of cobbling and an oval feature of uncertain date. An area of possible occupation debris or later plough soil was also present within the area enclosed by the ditch but this contained finds of various dates and was clearly disturbed. The site was domestic in nature and presumably represents part of a much larger settlement connected to the nearby Roman fort at Watercrook, established in the first century AD less than 0.5km to the south-east.
