Abstract:
Greenlane Archaeology carried out a rapid desk-based assessment and archaeological evaluation of land between Fern Bank and East View, Reagill, Penrith. The site occupies part of a field to the west side of the hamlet of Reagill and has remained largely unchanged since the mid-19th century. Lidar imagery showed several features of possible archaeological interest within the site boundary, comprising possible platforms and boundaries, some of which were specifically targeted during the evaluation, which comprised seven 20m long linear trenches. The earthworks on the south side of the site comprised redeposited material below a thin topsoil. Elsewhere a shallow ditch of post-medieval date connected to a trough against the eastern field boundary and a possible track was revealed towards the north side of the area and a bank along the west side of the site formed the edge of a finer, more improved soil. The bank, although difficult to date, is similar to other field systems in the area thought to date from the late prehistoric period onwards; however, only a small quantity of post-medieval pottery and iron objects were found. The redeposited material to the south side of the site probably derived from the coal mines to the west of the area and was probably placed here to improve access from the mines to the main road. Later features, including the drains and a track, relate to attempts to improve the land from the 19th century onwards.
