Abstract: |
Evaluation consisting of 10 trenches in the northern part of a field to the west of Gainford and south of Spa Road. Mostly negative, however Trenches 35 and 37 encountered a wide shallow medieval or post-medieval possible trackway. Trench 30 confirmed the position of a railway cutting representing the former Darlington to Barnard Castle rialway. Limited archaeological remains found, all of which were medieval or post-medieval and agricultural in nature. A large linear anomaly highlighted by the geophysical survey of the site was found to be related to the now closed Darlington-Barnard Castle railway. |
