Abstract:
A non-invasive Historic Buildings Assessment with documentary research was carried out on farm buildings at Head Barton Farm in advance of a planning application for the repair of the buildings and partial conversion for use as residential units and camping barns Seven historic farm buildings were described and recorded in 2019. These include 18th- and 19th-century linhays, a stable, a threshing barn and horse-engine house a cart shed and a piggery. One of the buildings is a rare, double linhay with shippons open to south and north divided by a central spine wall. The buildings occupy an ancient settlement site, are aligned along an ancient roadway from Exeter to Barnstaple and probably replace medieval buildings of which no remains are extant. The farm was substantially rebuilt in the late 19th century for the Hon Mark Rolle and now forms part of the Kingsnympton Park Estate
