Abstract: |
A programme of historic building recording at Ravensworth Castle, Gateshead was required during the course of the formulation of a Conservation Management Plan for Ravensworth Castle and Estate. Ravensworth Castle is located within the Ravensworth Estate, immediately was of the A1 western bypass at Team Valley, Gateshead. Situated within the parish of Lamesley, the estate lies on the western fringe of Gateshead, on the west bank of the River Team. The estate consists of extensive wooded areas, farmed meadows, parkland and isolated residential and farm buildings. At the centre of the estate is a complex of buildings comprising a ruined medieval castle and 19th century country house designed by John Nash, elements of which form the subjects of this programme of works. The standing remains of the medieval towers and Nash house were designated Grade II* and the stable block and towered gateway were listed as Grade II in the 1960s. the site of the medieval castle was scheduled in 1977, revised in 1999, with the estate designated a Conservation Area in 1990.
A control framework was established through a network of survey stations using a Leica TCR 705 TST, subsequently surveyed using a Topcon GRS 1 differential GPS.
Key points on the relevant elevations were recorded using the TST, providing a framework for subsequent works. A 14 megapixel camera was attached to a 5m extendable mast so as to be perpendicular to the elevation, and linked to a laptop for ease of use. The elevations were photographed as a series of overlapping images from multiple vertical camera stations. These images were then processed for clarity and use in AutoCAD, and subsequently superimposed and rectified onto the surveyed elevation framework. the composite image was then digitised to create an accurate elevation drawing. The towered gateway was originally considered to be of some significance as a feature associated with the County House complex and is a good example of the extent of the visual conceit carried throughout the site. The results of the survey work undertaken as part of this project, whilst contributing to the corpus of information available about the structures do not alter their previously considered level of significance as considerable. The pre-intervention recording of the castle is complete, as of this study, although further work will be required on the towered gateway to clarify the original function of the purpose of the towers. |
