Abstract: |
Excavation works took place at Redlands, Back Lane, Burnham Market in September and October 2021. The work took place in advance of the demolition of the existing bungalow and the creation of six new residential dwellings. The excavation comprised the machine excavation of two areas forming the outline of housing plots. Metal-detecting was carried out every 0.2m during machine excavation. Once machine excavation was completed, features were hand excavated. All relationships and at least one profile slot from each linear was investigated. Discrete features were 50% excavated. Full single context recording was undertaken on the site, and high resolution digital photographs were taken of all features. Two further areas were monitored under an archaeological watching brief. One area to the north-west of the site was excavated in advance of a lowering of the ground level to allow access for heavy machinery. Finally, the area to the north-east of the site was observed during the digging of footings for further buildings. 4.1.1 The excavation comprised two main areas. These were a rectangular area on the site of dwelling 6 measuring approx 12.5 x 6.5m or 0.0081 ha (approx. 0.02 acre), and a square area on the site of dwellings 4 and 5 measuring 12.5 x 12.5m or 0.156 ha (approx 0.38 acre). A watching brief on works to the north-west of the site subsequently required a third irregular excavation area measuring approximately 9 x 7m or 0063 ha (approx 0.015 acres). The excavations revealed evidence of multi-phase Roman features, and two further undated inhumations. The Roman activity began with the establishment of a possible work area to the north of site, which included a cobbled surface and features utilised for waste deposition. Redlands was then enclosed by eastern and southern boundaries, perhaps marking incorporation into a larger system of co-axial fields. Inside, an organised system of ditches, identified as planting trenches, were imposed in the southern half of the site. The work and agricultural areas co-existed, perhaps as part of a larger estate, for most of the early Roman period. After this the site appears to have been abandoned for a number of years, before being reorganised dramatically in the late Roman period by the imposition of a large boundary ditch and a T-shaped enclosure. These changes saw the area utilised for widespread waste deposition, before activity eventually declined to a possible area of unorganised occupation to the south-east of the site. Early medieval activity was represented only by occasional probable robbing of material from earlier features. Redlands and its surrounds then remained as open farmland until the 20th century. |
