Abstract:
MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) carried out a programme of archaeological investigation during the excavation and installation of external and internal water supply and drainage within the churchyard of St Margaret’s Church, Alderton, Northamptonshire St Margaret’s Church, Alderton, is a Grade II* Listed Building, dating to the 14th century. Twenty-five articulated burials orientated east-west were observed, cleaned and recorded before removal. All were within a homogamous soil deposit. One intact brick lined tomb was identified during the work and was not disturbed. No disarticulated remains were encountered, evidencing good record keeping or grave markers / stone memorials had been used and removed at some time in the past. All human remains were re-interred within the trench backfill in their original burial location. The burials represent common burial practices during the post-medieval period. The burials form one of the final phases of interment in the churchyard and are likely to date from the Victorian period. No grave cuts were visible in section and no charnel was encountered.
