Abstract:
The excavation was two trenches (Areas 1 and 2) which targeted two discreet concentrations of prehistoric settlement activity previously identified in the 2010 evaluation (CFA 2010). Area 1 consisted of a post built round house with east facing entrance, within which was located a pennanular souterrain. This souterrain consisted of two chambers accessed from the south-west terminus and separated by a narrow doorway. A small tunnel connected the south-western chamber of the souterrain with a north-west to south-east running ditch. This appeared to have functioned as a drain, allowing water to collect in the souterrain. Evidence for timber lining was found in the form of stake-holes spaced along the inner edges of the north-eastern chamber of the souterrain cut. Area 2 was located c.125m to the north-east and comprised another post-built roundhouse with east facing entrance. Both structures may to have been abandoned at a similar time during the first half of the first millennium AD as similar pits containing wheel -thrown pottery were cut into their entrances potentially at the time of abandonment.
