Abstract: |
A two-phase archaeological investigation was undertaken, consisting of an archaeological desk-based appraisal, and a scheme of archaeological evaluation, to inform redevelopment proposals at the site of Union Terrace Ca Park, Clarence Street. Four 3m x 3m evaluation trenches were excavated, which encountered 2.4m of stratigraphy over natural subsoil, consistent with the outcome of the desk-based appraisal. Landscaping or levelling layers of Roman date were encountered 1.7m BGL, overlain by homogenous clay layers of 12th- to 13th-century date. A brick culvert was encountered, likely to have been contemporary with construction of brick-built, cellared terraced housing in the early 19th century, the remains of which were also encountered during the evaluation. These were demolished in 1972, and the area subsequently used as a car park. |
