Abstract: |
In 2021, Wessex Archaeology undertook geophysical survey of three separate areas covering a combined total of 6.1 ha north of Harthill. Later in 2021, members of the Harthill with Woodall Archaeology Group excavated a 20 x 1 m trench over a double-ditched ring-ditch that had been detected during the geophysical survey. Results of geophysical survey: In Area 1 a possible enclosure and several boundary features were identified as well as several circular anomalies that could indicate roundhouses or other settlement activity. Evidence of ridge and furrow cultivation was also identified. Several possible ditch-features, a former field boundary and ridge and furrow were detected in Area 2. A possible barrow cemetery was detected in Area 3. This comprised two adjoining double-ditched ring ditches as well as two single ring ditches. In addition, a probable field system was identified in Area 3; it comprises largely co-axial land divisions that appear to respect the presence of the ring ditches. Results of excavation: A c. 20 m-long, c. 1 m-wide, east–west oriented aligned trench was excavated by members of the Harthill with Woodall Archaeology Group. The trench targeted the centre of the largest of the double-ditched ring-ditch anomalies identified by the geophysical survey. An urn was found upright within the centre of the enclosed area. The urn was block-lifted and then micro-excavated, assessed and its contents subject to environmental sampling. The off-site work on the urn and its contents was undertaken by Wessex Archaeology. The assessment had established that the pottery vessel is the fragmentary remains of a small, bipartite Collared Urn of Early Bronze Age date. 0.6 g of burnt bone was recovered from the urn, the fragments are very small (mostly 4 mm or less) with no identifiable skeletal elements. The morphology of the bone is not distinctive, but it is most likely animal not human. No remains of environmental significance were found in the urn. The urn was recovered from the centre of the area enclosed by the double-ditched ring-ditch, which appears to be a barrow of unusually large and elaborate appearance. A relatively large number of barrows probably once existed on or close to the Magnesian Limestone ridge in the prehistoric period, with many since destroyed, largely by ploughing. The monument represents a rare, albeit poorly preserved, survivor. |
