Abstract: |
A photographic record and analytical study was made of the ruined former nave, chancel and north aisle of St Andrew's church, Walberswick. The ruins were fully-scaffolded during extensive masonry repairs and this provided an opportunity for the recording of the otherwise inaccessible upper reaches of the remains. The once magnificent church was constructed between 1426-c.1510, during a boom-period for commerce, ship-building and fishing harvests at Walberswick's port. Following the town's decline, the main body of the church was deliberately abandoned and the roofs from the chancel, nave and south aisle were removed and sold to fund the creation of a smaller church out of south aisle in 1696. The survey work identified the sequence in which the church was built and suggested a chronology for its construction. |
