Abstract:
The evaluation comprised eight evaluation trenches: seven measured approximately 30m long by 2m wide, and one measured approximately 15m long by 2m wide, which were excavated across the proposal site. Trench 4 measured only 27.50m long, due to the presence of a live service at the southern end of the trench. The tarmac and concrete layers in the location of the trenches were removed prior to the evaluation start, down to the hardcore layers below. The trenches were excavated using a mechanical excavator with a toothless bucket. All spoil from these works was scanned visually and with a metal detector, with a particular focus on recovering finds from the prehistoric periods. A series of made ground deposits were observed overlying the natural geology, demonstrating the geological and manmade processes which formed the landscape of the development site. Due to the presence of these numerous made ground deposits, there is a high probability that the site was subject to truncation during the construction of the building and associated carpark. In addition to this, there is further truncation in the form of services running across the site. The small number of features which were identified can be securely dated to the post-medieval to modern periods, and were mostly services.
