Abstract: |
An archaeological trial trench evaluation was carried out by AC archaeology ahead of a proposed residential development on land off Newcourt Road, Topsham, Exeter. The site lies to the northwest of Topsham. It comprises an approximately rectangular shaped 1-hectare formerly pasture plot bounded by Newcourt Road to the southwest and the Exeter to Exmouth branch line to the northeast. The archaeological investigations comprised the machine-excavation of eight trenches totalling 180m in length, with each trench 1.5m wide. These were positioned to target the anomalies interpreted from the geophysical survey and to test blank areas. No archaeological features or deposits were exposed in any of the trenches. The targeted geophysical anomalies were found to largely correspond with denser variations of gravels in the natural subsoil. |
