Abstract:		 Archaeological monitoring of groundworks at Greenwood Cottage was conducted across four separate days, spread across two months in 2023. An initial stage of topsoil removal and ground reduction was conducted on the 12th October 2023 to level the ground in preparation for the excavation of footings trenches. Excavation of the footings trenches began on the 25th October 2023. Initial excavation of the south/south-west footing was successful, however excavation to depth of 1.5m resulted in the trench edges becoming unstable due to very saturated ground and poor site conditions. As a result the excavation area suffered multiple events of collapse and all groundworks were consequently halted due to safety reasons. It was subsequently agreed shoring of trench edges would need to be completed whilst excavation of remaining footings took place. The main excavation of footings trenches took place on the 20th and 21st November 2023. The footings were excavated to a width ranging between 0.7m and 1.3m and varied in depth between 0.9m and 1.5m across an area roughly measuring 12.6 by 10m. Excavation of an outstanding 5m long trench was planned to commence on the 30th November 2023. Following arrival at the site it was discovered the trench had already been excavated and concreted without an archaeologist present for monitoring. During the course of archaeological monitoring, no archaeological features or deposits were observed and no finds were recovered. The excavations failed to yield any evidence related to medieval activity of Tetsworth or any other period.
