Abstract: |
Proforma recording sheets, scale drawing This survey and training session was carried out by CITiZAN at the Barge Graveyard, Maldon, Essex in March 2016. The aim was to familiarise participants with foreshore archaeology including recognising features, archaeological recording methods and health and safety in the intertidal zone. No archaeological work has previously been carried out on the site, save for a preliminary photographic survey with a Small Unmanned Aircraft (SUA) carried out by MOLA in February 2016 to provide an overall plan of the site. The Barge Graveyard comprises c15 vessels including the remains (‘barge bottoms’) of five known Thames sailing barges, four of which are recorded in the Essex Historic Environment Record. The survey concentrated on the three most accessible sets of remains: Thames sailing barge Vicunia (not in the HER); ‘the fishing vessel’ and another unidentified vessel. Evidence for burning on the starboard side of Vicunia concurs with documentary evidence that the barge was dumped at the Graveyard then burnt. Details of the build of the fishing vessel suggests it dates to the 19th or early 20th century. Axe marks on the unidentified vessel suggest some attempts as salvage; remaining copper sheathing on the port side suggest the vessel was wrecked at the Barge Graveyard rather than dumped. All the vessels are at risk from natural threats and further recording and monitoring work would be useful to provide a full record, particularly for the Thames sailing barges. Further research into these, and into the history of the Graveyard itself (thought to date from the 1980s) is recommended. |
