CS Archaeology unpublished report series

An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of a proposed mixed development. No known archaeological sites or significant historic features lay within the site. It appeared that the site area had been in agricultural use subsequent to having been cleared of trees in more recent centuries. Analysis of available air photographs for the site and a site walkover did not suggest any archaeological remains. Unknown archaeological remains could have been present but the site was viewed had having a low archaeological potential. [AIP]

An archaeological desk-based assessment was carried out at land to the north of Thurnscoe. There were no Scheduled Ancient Monuments in the study area, however, there were 27 sites of which eight were statutory protected sites in the form of Grade II Listed buildings. [Au(adp)]

The watching brief was undertaken for proposed parking, south-west of The Pines, Thornton Le Street, Northallerton and for an extension onto the south-east gable wall. The site strip of the parking area revealed a continuation of an extant earthwork and the trench for the extensions revealed a small medieval ditch/furrow. The pottery assessment has confirmed the presence of medieval Tees Valley ware from the late medieval period (13th to 14th centuries).

The proposed development of the mill entails the conversion and partial demolition of the existing mill building to form five dwellings. The present multi-phase building started as a water-powered flax-spinning mill during the 1820s. By the late 19th century the flax mill had diversified into spinning rope from hemp and a corn mill was built onto the north-west corner. Both mills were destroyed by fire and largely rebuilt during the early/mid 20th century. Many original features, were destroyed leaving standing walls form the former buildings. The principal interest of the mill is in the sequence of power generation and transmission which largely remains in situ, and is located in the original flax mill's basement and sub-basement level. The work of the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England (RCHME) in the 1980s and 90s has provided detailed baseline information that this assessment has built upon.

The site represents land adjacent to 1 Manor Farm, High Worsall. The site consists of the rectangular footprint of the proposed extension and measures 8.4m x 6m. Planning permission was granted for a 2 storey extension to the east facing gable of 1 Manor Farm Cottage. Permission has been granted on condition that an archaeological watching brief is undertaken. The archaeological interest in the site comes from the proximity of standing earthworks associated with the Deserted Medieval Village of High Worsall with St John's Chapel at its centre. The Watching Brief entailed an initial site strip down to 0.1m below the pre-existing surface bisecting the top soil. After the site strip was recorded, four foundation trenches 0.6m wide and were excavated down to 0.9m below the surface. A late Post Medieval wall was revealed but no other archaeological features.

An Archaeological Watching Brief was undertaken at 60 The Boyle, Barwick in Elmet, West Yorkshire. This work was required to meet a condition placed on planning consent. The archaeological watching brief consisted of monitoring the excavation of a small foundation trench for the construction of a front extension to the front of 60 The Boyle, Barwick in Elmet, West Yorkshire. The results of the watching brief were largely negative, the excavations did reveal an archaeological deposit but this proved to be a mixed colluvial context which had incorporated artefacts that may date from as early as the Late Prehistoric/Romano-British period and pottery from the Late Medieval period.

Planning Consent has been given subject to archaeological conditions, for the conversion of Ackworth Hall's farm buildings to provide ancillary accommodation for the present owners. The PDA consists of a series of historic farm buildings, part of an isolated farmstead west of High Ackworth, West Yorkshire. The historic farm buildings historically consisted of an L shaped building range, set around a rectangular farmyard. The farm buildings included: a threshing barn: stables/cow house; a pigsty with poultry house; an extension to the stables/cow house and a small lean-to shed abutting the main range. The barn survives largely in its original form but was re-roofed during the 19th century. The single storey stables/cow house was extensively remodelled during the late 20th century resulting in a general loss of historic features. A number of the buildings did survive up until last year (2007) relatively unmodified. This report records the existing buildings (extant 2008) and reconstructs as far as possible, the recently demolished buildings, through a series of historic digital photographs. The watching brief recorded a range of archaeological artefacts and deposits which has complemented our archaeological knowledge of Ackworth Old Hall.

Building Appraisal of a building complex to the rear of 8-9 Hall Gate, that are proposed to be demolished for the erection of a two storey offices. Results revealed two 19th century buildings: an office and a workshop. These had been heavily modified and little in terms of original fixtures or fittings remained. The report recommends a watching brief in order to record further building features and to record potential cellars across the Proposed Development Area
