National Archives Accreditation awarded to the Archaeology Data Service

We are excited to announce that the ADS has been awarded Archive Service Accreditation via their assessor body in England, The National Archives.

The ADS is the first ever digital-only archive service to receive this accreditation, which denotes that the repository ensures the long-term collection, preservation and accessibility of our archive heritage. Accreditation is a UK quality standard that recognises good performance in all areas of archive service delivery. For more information about this important accreditation see The National Archives website.

The Accreditation Panel which made the award was:

“…delighted to receive this effective application for the first digital-only archive service to apply for Accreditation. They congratulated the service on its achievements, identifying an impressive and well-managed operation which is well aware of its risks and clear in its ambitions, collecting proactively and providing effective access to its users.”

Professor Julian Richards, ADS Director said:

“This is wonderful news. It reflects the hard work and robust processes put in place by our archivists to ensure that primary archaeological research data deposited with ADS are preserved for the nation.”

This accomplishment is the latest in a series of assessment exercises undertaken by the ADS to evaluate our digital preservation infrastructure leading to several certifications assigned to trustworthy data repositories.  Visit the Accreditation page on the ADS website for more information.
