Abstract: |
In July 2009, North Pennines Archaeology Ltd were commissioned by Hartlepool Borough Council to undertake an archaeological evaluation on the site of the Fire Station, Durham Street, Hartlepool, Teesside. Archaeological deposits were observed within two of the three trenches. In Trench 1, a probable boundary ditch was observed to be truncated by a later, similar feature, which contained a fragmentary piece of animal vertebra. A series of three possible postholes and one stake hole, were observed to be in alignment to the edge of this ditch feature. A sand levelling deposit and a red-brick demolition layer, as well as a small pit were observed within the upper layers of the trench, which probably relate to activity at the site during both the construction and the demolition of the Victorian terraces which occupied the site up to 1964. Trench 2 contained backfill comprising demolition rubble, to a depth exceeding 2.5m. Trench 3 contained three distinct layers comprising a possible medieval garden soil, a sand layer possibly representing a levelling of the site, and hardcore for the car park; the latter deposits therefore date to the modern period. The evaluation did not uncover any well defined settlement activity or remains associated with the medieval chapel or well of St Helen's |
