Abstract:
ARCUS were commissioned by Barratt Homes Sheffield to undertake a desk-based assessment of land at Carr Valle, Bolsover, Derbyshire. The development site consists of land either side of Water Lane which to the east comprises pasture and to the west, apart from a small tract on which there is a bungalow. allotment land, the majority of which has reverted to waste. Until the turn of the twentieth century the immediate area was agricultural land in the ownership of the Duke of Portland. Following the opening of Bolsover Colliery in 1889, the Lancashire, Derbyshire and East Coast railway from 1891 and the New Byron Brickworks by the 1890s, land to the north and west of the site was developed for housing. Among the first buildings were two rows of cottages, apparently built to accommodate workers at the brick factory; subsequently demolished, the southernmost row was originally sited within the extreme west of the development area. The main housing area comprised the village of Carr Vale, laid out in streets aligned with former field boundaries and essentially providing overspill for the more substantially built model village of New Bolsover. Significant sub-surface archaeological deposits are deemed unlikely to exist within the development area.
