Abstract: |
A Level 3 building survey was undertaken of a redundant shop in Windermere, as part of a planning application for its conversion to offices. Prior to survey work, a rapid desk based assessment was undertaken. The building appears to have been constructed in 1859 (date stone) possibly by Harrison Builders, seemingly as a house, one of many constructed following the coming of the railway to the area. By the end of the 19th century No.2 and No. 4 Victoria Street were occupied by Airey's who were grocers and drapers. Airey's occupied the shop up until the 1960s, following which it was occupied by Swainson's. The building survey has indicated that No.2 appears to have been constructed as a house, as suggested by the surviving quions of a former doorway, but at some point the main north elevation was converted to a shop front at ground floor level. Very little else survives internally, apart from the locations of the original fireplaces. The building appears to have undergone alteration in the Edwardian period |
