This collection comprises a report, images and site records from a desk-based cultural heritage assessment and field survey undertaken by The Archaeological Practice Ltd between April and June 2021, with respect to a proposed Woodland Grant Scheme project on Whitton Farm, south of Rothbury, north-west Northumberland. In addition to site visits, the assessment involved consultations with the local planning authority, an examination of historic maps and documentary records for the area, consultation of published local and regional histories, consideration of the results of previous archaeological investigations pertaining to the area and consultation and synthesis of data held by the Northumberland Heritage Environment Record (HER).

The main findings of the assessment are that while later prehistoric, Roman and medieval settlement sites are well-attested in the vicinity, there is relatively little specific evidence for such sites within the present assessment area. The principal constraints concern prehistoric rock art in localised areas, notably sites [06] and [07], which suggests later Neolithic/early bronze age activity in the area, a suspicion confirmed by the presence of known or suspected burial mounds, some of which have been badly damaged if not destroyed by ploughing. There are other sites surviving as earthworks which may date from prehistoric times, although clarification of their nature and chronology is not possible without further archaeological field investigation. There is also high potential for as yet unrecognised early prehistoric settlement sites that may survive as lithic scatters.
