Introduction

This collection comprises a report, images, spreadsheets and scanned site records from an archaeological evaluation at Hardwick Old Hall, Hardwick Estate, Derbyshire undertaken by Allen Archaeology in February 2022.
English Heritage commissioned Allen Archaeology Limited to undertake an evaluation by test pitting in advance of proposed drainage works situated among the ruins of Hardwick Old Hall, Hardwick, Derbyshire. The archaeological evaluation comprised of the excavation of seven test pits in the proposed development area in advance of drainage works, situated both in the interior and exterior to the hall, with the test pits ranging in size between 1m x 1m to 1.80m x 2.20m. The test pits identified possible floor surfaces within and immediately west of the West Wing, as well as artefacts and material likely derived from the gradual collapse and ruination of Hardwick Old Hall. Evidence for the foundations of the West Wing have also been uncovered.
