Introduction

This collection comprises reports, images, site records, and CAD files from an archaeological evaluation. This was carried out by Colchester Archaeological Trust in April 2021, at Watch House Green, Felsted, Uttlesford, Essex, CM6 3EF.
An archaeological evaluation (five trial-trenches) was carried out in advance of the construction of four new dwellings. The aim was to record the extent of any surviving archaeological deposits, and to assess the archaeological potential of the site to allow the ECCHEA (Essex County Council Historic Environment Advisor) to determine if further investigation is required.
Five trial-trenches were machine-excavated under the supervision of a CAT (Colchester Archaeological Trust) archaeologist. All trenches were 20m long by 1.8m wide, unless stated below. A full context list can be found in Appendix 1.
The site is located east of a 17th-century timber-framed house (The Watch House) and to the southeast of a 16th century timber-framed barn. Nearby evaluation works have uncovered features dating from the Roman, medieval and post-medieval periods. In total, twelve cut features (eleven ditches and one post-hole) and a metalled surface were identified in this evaluation. The predominant phase of activity present was from the Roman period, except three ditches and a post-hole that were post-medieval or later in date.
