Introduction
This collection comprises images, a report, and vector data from an archaeological evaluation at Thatch End, 54 Mill Lane, Greenfield, Bedfordshire. This work was undertaken by Albion Archaeology in February 2022 prior to alterations and extensions to the existing listed building.
The archaeological evaluation comprised the excavation of two trial trenches. No archaeological features or deposits were revealed and there was no evidence of previous ground reduction that might have removed former archaeological features.
The lack of any archaeological features or pre-modern artefacts supports the notion that the permitted development area lies outside the medieval settlement, which appears to have been concentrated along High Street, c. 300m to the south of the site, and around the mill, c. 100m to the north of the site.
The results of the evaluation have shown that the archaeological potential of the site is extremely low, with no archaeological features present in the trenches and no premodern artefacts within the topsoil or subsoil. It suggests that the potential impact of the proposed development on archaeological remains is negligible.
