This collection comprises images, reports, and site records from an archaeological trial trench evaluation on the land north of A14 Junction 56, Wherstead, Suffolk. This work was undertaken by Pre-Construct Archaeology in November 2019.
Near the eastern edge of the site, the evaluation identified a small pit containing five sherds of probable Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pottery. The remains of a field system, elements of which corresponded with linear anomalies shown on the results of a geophysical survey of the site, were also encountered. There was no conclusive evidence by which to date the field system as the only finds were two small sherds of Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pottery and fragments of post-medieval peg tile from the upper fill of two of the ditches. Environmental soil samples taken from these features produced generally poor results with few charred seeds or grains and a high degree of bioturbation evident in the form of intrusive material.
Fourteen struck flints were identified spread across the evaluation area. The struck flint ranged in date from the Mesolithic to the Late Neolithic-Early Bronze Age. This indicates the potential for low-level earlier prehistoric activity spread across the evaluation area, as indicated by the presence of a possible Early Neolithic pit in Trench 8.
Other features investigated by the evaluation, several of which corresponded with geophysical anomalies, were shown to be geological in origin or naturally-formed features such as tree throws and rooting.
