| Description | Level 2 Historic Building Survey as a result of a condion on planning permission. Haggworm Hall, also historically known as ‘Hagworth Hall’ is a building of a number of phases. There may have been a house here since the 16th century, and the site was occupied by the ‘characterful’ former royalist soldier William Appleby by the mid-17th century and whose residence may have included the existing stone vaulted cellar and perhaps a few internal walls. A significant rebuild of the early 18th century is attested by a reused date stone in the south elevation and the barn and byre which form the east and west ends of the main range may also date from this period. The central main house appears to have had a significant rebuild in the md 19th century when the current south elevation was rebuilt in regular fashion with ‘water-shot’ masonry and the resetting of the earlier 1721 date stone above the central first floor window. Later additions and alterations are of less interest and reflect changes in farming practice through the 20th century with improvements to milking parlours and the construction of some modern framed sheds. A search of the tithe survey and census of 1841 together with local newspapers has provided some small additional amount of information relating to owners/occupiers of the farm in the last two centuries or so. |
