Title Port Carlisle, Hadrian's Wall, August 2021: Curtain Wall Consolidation and Gate Relocation
Description WallCAP staff undertook a watching brief over two days in August 2021 at a site 700m west of the village of Port Carlisle, Cumbria, while consolidation work took place and a field gate was relocated. Heritage Consolidation removed all vegetation, consolidated the remains of the curtain Wall on either side of the existing gate, and finished by turf capping the core with sod. Some of the modern mortar used in a previous repair on the west side of the gate was removed and appropriate lime mortar was applied to tail bed strategic facing stones on both sides of the gate. Just over 4m of curtain Wall was consolidated. The old gate was then wired shut, and the barbed wire fence was extended across the opening on either side of the Wall to protect it from livestock. Contractors installed the new 14 foot field gate at the site to the east where WallCAP had excavated in April 2021. A watching brief was maintained while they used a small digger to removed scrubby vegetation and demolished the hedge bank, which was just over half a metre high. A small area of modern mortar sealing an uneven layer of core stones was uncovered. on the western end of the clearance area. This was not removed or disturbed, and it was covered with soil and then a dry stone cairn to protect it.
