| Title | A History of Repairs to the Stained Glass in the Great East Window of Gloucester Cathedral |
| Description | The Great East Window of Gloucester Cathedral is the second largest medieval window in Britain. The thesis investigates its history of repairs and both quantifies and qualifies these. A landmark restoration campaign in 1861-62 under the guidance of the eminent art historian Charles Winston was important in its implications for the development of modern conservation philosophy. The thesis shows that, contrary to general assumption, this campaign has not been obliterated by later interventions. The validity of some repairs (seven replacement heads) is discussed and proposals are made for their future. Recommendations are also given for future conservation measures to ensure the long-term survival of the glass. |
