An assessment of the archaeological context of the early Anglo-Saxon cremation.
Suffolk County Council
Filename: LKD001_ContextReport_01a.pdf (3 MB) Description: An assessment of the relationship of the various cemetery excavations at Lackford to each other, the likely extent and the immediate archaeological context within the Lark valley. The records of the nearby Roman and early Anglo-Saxon sites show that a Roman rural temple or shrine lies to the north-east of the cemetery. Recent finds suggest that there may be several early Anglo-Saxon domestic sites along the terrace of the river Lark to the north and east of the cemetery. In the wider context of the Lark Valley and north-west Suffolk the cemetery is probably an early focus, perhaps related to the importance of the Icklingham small town as a religious and political centre in the late Roman period. The potential for further work includes the use of geophysical survey to locate the non-cemetery features to accuratelyly locate the areas excavated in 1947. To determine the full extent of the cemetery would require a programme of trial excavations. |

Anglo-Saxon cremations from Lackford Anglo-Saxon cemetery (LKD 001).
Suffolk County Council
Filename: LKD001_2015_ExcRep.pdf (6 MB) Description: Report on the rapid excavation of four cremation burials in 2015 following their discovery by a metal detectorist as pottery and burnt bone scatters in the ploughsoil. Two more complete burials were found an the open plough furrow. This account provides the excavation records - plans, sections, contexts, photos for the 2015 event. The burials, including details of cremated bone, pottery and copper-alloy brooch, were included in the overall site analysis in 2022. |

Title: Context references in Lethbridge excavations 1947-1949 (mainly based on the notebook) Filename: LKD001_1947-9_Contextreferencesandpossibl...ns.pdf (181 kB) Description: Notes on the context labelling systems used by Lethbridge in his notebook. These contexts also appear in the 1951 publication figures and in the CUMAA catalogue. Locating these within the published excavation trench plan is not wholly possible from the available evidence. |

Lackford, Suffolk LKD 001, Archive Report on excavations at the early Anglo-Saxon cremation cemetery 2015-6 and research into the 1947-9 excavations.
Suffolk County Council
Filename: LKD001_ArchiveReport_V2-1.pdf (10 MB) Description: Detailed analysis of the results of rapid excavations at the Lackford early Anglo-Saxon cremation cemetery in 2015 and 2016, which comprised 15 partially intact cremation burials and 38 surface scatters of pottery and cremated material, provides evidence for human and animal deposits and other pyre and grave goods. Alongside this small sample excavated under modern conditions the excavations by T C Lethbridge in 1947-9 of some 500 cremation burials have been reassessed, with updated studies of the pottery and artefacts held at Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. In particular the material has been compared to the results from the large cremation cemetery at Spong Hill, Norfolk. Burial at Lackford began in the first half of the 5th century and probably continued into the second half of the 6th century and involved a mixed population including children. Pyre goods commonly included whole animal sacrifices, meat joints, female-style dress accessories, ivory bag rings and metal vessels; additional grave goods were toilet items, particularly antler combs and metal tweezers. The pottery containers are mostly but not exclusively local products; decoration includes a range of stamped motifs some of which are distinctively local but show surprisingly long-distance contacts. Lipid analysis of the 2016 pots strongly suggests that most were used, particularly for dairy products, before being used in burials. Work on the combined archives has also provided a basis for future examination of the site, the physical extent of which is far from certain. Appendices are in a separate report. |

Lackford, Suffolk LKD 001, Assessment Report on excavations on the early Anglo-Saxon cremation cemetery 2015-2016.
Suffolk County Council
Filename: LKD001_AssessmentReport_02-1.pdf (2 MB) Description: An assessment of the cremation burials excavated in 2015-6 at Lackford. The pottery includes substantial amounts of at least 59 vessels, with variable amounts of damage and dispersion; the majority were narrow mouthed jar forms in granitic and quartz tempered fabrics, many of them decorated. Cremated bone was in good condition, allowing the identification of individuals in both the surface scatters and the more complete burials; there was also a high percentage of cremated animal bone, including a horse burial and a cow. Eight of the urned burials contained grave goods, mainly dress accessories (beads, brooches), personal possessions (purse rings, combs, miniature tweezers) and glass vessel fragments; a few other artefacts were found amongst the surface scatters. The radiocarbon dating of all the cremations inside urns suggests that deposition may have been during a fairly short period within the second half of the 5th or early 6th century, and this seems to correlate with the preliminary dating for the finds. |
