Title: Hornsea Offshore Windfarm. The Samian Pottery (Wessex Site 110491) Filename: 221790_HOW01_Samian_Pottery_Report.pdf (309 kB) Description: A small collection of 55 sherds of samian with a total weight of 769g (1.167 rim EVEs) was submitted for identification and dating. Samian was recovered from 39 contexts from six different areas/plots across the study area. The quantities are small, and insufficient to allow for any statistical or functional analyses. The presence of sherds of these quantities of samian can be seen to represent evidence of the low level of samian consumption commensurate with a rural settlement predominantly based on an agrarian economy (Willis 2005, section 8.2.6). |

Title: SUMMARY REPORT FOR MONOGRAPH The stone objects Filename: 221790_HOW01_Stone_Objects_Report.pdf (205 kB) Description: Most of the stone objects from Hornsea have been made from locally available stone types, such as the Lias limestone and the sandstone, as well as the diorite saddle quern, which has been made from a boulder and therefore probably originated as a glacial erratic. The whetstones appear to have been locally sourced in an ad-hoc fashion, making use of cobbles, rather than the importation of finely made tools. Some of the querns are from more distant sources. The quern of Spilsby sandstone, for example, was probably produced some 40km to the south of Hornsea and the Millstone Grit querns and millstones some 100km or more to the west in Derbyshire. However, both rock types were commonly used for querns in Lincolnshire during the Roman period so their recovery here is to be expected. |

Title: Specialist Report: Multi isotope analysis of four multi-period individuals from Hornsea, Lincolnshire. Filename: 221790_HOW01_Human_Bone_Isotope_Analysis.pdf (260 kB) Description: This report presents the results of an isotopic study into the diet and mobility of four individuals from Hornsea, Lincolnshire. The carbon and nitrogen isotope data suggests a predominantly terrestrial C3 diet with possible evidence for a temporal shift in dietary habits consistent with the widely observed trend of increasing amounts of marine foods being consumed over time in England. The sulphur isotope data identifies individual 7476 as an outlier within the assemblage either as a non-local to the area or due to a difference in subsistence processes over time. |

The excavations for this scheme mostly encountered Iron Age and early Roman sites with pottery assemblages similar to other local assemblages from the Able UK and A160/A180 Port of Immingham schemes (Rowlandson et al. 2017; Beeby with Precious 2010; Rowlandson and Fiske 2016; 2019b). |
