excavations have revealed a sequence of dock structures; the docks were constructed in the twelfth century and additions, repairs and land reclamation continued into the fourteenth century when a new dock was built further into the harbour. The docks were designed to handle coastal trade. Fishing was important part of the town's economy throughout its history.
