Abstract: the author considers aspects of current archaeological curatorial practices in the context of the rural environment of Wales, as well as a series of initiatives developed over the past decade, in particular the Tir Gofal agri-environmental scheme. Its potential for curatorial archaeology is discussed and it is argued from a variety of perspectives that the emphasis placed on different areas of liaison arrangements between farmers, scheme staff and archaeologists could be shifted towards a more active engagement
