Abstract: evidence of Roman ditches and hearths was followed in the mid-thirteenth century by part of the earthwork known as the Chippenham Ditch, as well as a street-frontage building. A period of disuse was followed by a timber industrial structure in the late-thirteenth century, which was rebuilt and converted into a dwelling in the fifteenth century and rebuilt again, in stone, in the seventeenth century. This was in turn followed by series of alterations, and the construction of a sequence of wells, cesspits, and ancillary buildings, and an early-twentieth-century malting kiln.
