Abstract: Symposium volume on the career of one of the great collectors of antiquities. The first editor provides his biography (pp 1-27), and various contributors deal with his Egyptian, Assyrian and Babylonian, Classical, and 'Limoges' enamel collections and his manuscripts. Roger H White ( 118-36) in 'Mayer and British archaeology' describes how he bought the Bryan Faussett collection of Kentish antiquities in 1854, when the British Museum failed to acquire it. As well as collecting assiduously himself he helped, and was helped by, C Roach Smith, Joseph Clarke, and others. The Mayer Collection formed the nucleus of the Liverpool Museum.
