Abstract: Despite progress in the study of medieval monasteries, including the development of a better understanding of the economic basis for monastic life through excavations of the agricultural and industrial features which occupy more peripheral parts of monastic precincts, as well as documentary and field surveys of monastic estates, there has still been a tendency for monastic studies to remain somewhat detached from the investigation of the medieval landscape as a whole. However, the contributions made at the Medieval Settlement Research Group's conference in Leicester in April 2009 provided an exciting indication of the extent to which the enquiry has been widened in recent times and the wide range of approaches being adopted. Themes and areas explored at the conference are outlined in this summary report.
