Abstract: This paper reports on the fourth year of the University of Cambridge Higher Education Field Academy (HEFA) project, which combines education and university outreach with the archaeological investigation of currently occupied rural settlements (CORS) by the excavation of test pits in open spaces, mostly private gardens. In 2008 167 test pits were excavated in total, across eight different counties: Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Derbyshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Kent, Norfolk and Suffolk. The results are summarised in this article, with sites presented in alphabetical order by county and then by site name. Interesting patterns are starting to emerge regarding the relationship between Anglo-Saxon and post-Conquest settlement, the development of dispersed patterns of settlement, the character of the nucleated village, and the fortunes of rural settlements in the later medieval period.
