Abstract: This paper explores a long-neglected subject; this detailed survey examines the identification of rood stairs and rood screens, their numbers and positions and the reasons for their survival in west Somerset, west Cornwall and part of north Norfolk. It discusses their relationship with chancel, nave and tower, turret forms, stair types and numbers, the placing of windows for lighting as well as postulating their function, date and who they were for. The author is currently working on a survey of all the rood stairs of Somerset.
