To here from eternity: Manchester Airport second runway

Discusses the archaeological strategy adopted prior to the development of a new runway, highlighting the benefit of undertaking field evaluation even if no archaeological remains are expected. In the case in question, important prehistoric and later remains were discovered and excavated, despite the fact that no significant sites had been identified in the initial desk-based study.
Crossing the street: archaeology and highways

Highlights the archaeological potential of the land beneath the thoroughfares of historic towns, especially relevant now that street surfaces are undergoing major renovation in many areas. Remains that may be found are those of medieval market stalls and High Crosses -- structures that have now mostly been demolished.
