Abstract
To here from eternity: Manchester Airport second runway
A Thompson
1 - 2
Discusses the archaeological strategy adopted prior to the development of a new runway, highlighting the benefit of undertaking field evaluation even if no archaeological remains are expected. In the case in question, important prehistoric and later remains were discovered and excavated, despite the fact that no significant sites had been identified in the initial desk-based study.
Crossing the street: archaeology and highways
A J Scrase
Highlights the archaeological potential of the land beneath the thoroughfares of historic towns, especially relevant now that street surfaces are undergoing major renovation in many areas. Remains that may be found are those of medieval market stalls and High Crosses -- structures that have now mostly been demolished.
Getting to grips in Guildford
Mary Alexander
A Guildford Museum archaeologist reports that local archaeologists have observed that many developments are destroying historic remains in the town without archaeological intervention, despite PPG 16. (see also 99/60).
Competitive tendering: is it time we stopped complaining
Hester Cooper-Reade
Considers whether there is any hard evidence that commercial competition has contributed to a perceived decline in standards in archaeology. The need for effective monitoring and enforcement of standards is highlighted, and constructive debate is called for.
Pooter's piece
Lupin Pooter
News of: the continuing crisis for Buckinghamshire's archaeologists; the relocation of the EH Ancient Monuments Lab; industrial remains at Rhyd-y-Car, Merthyr Tydfil; Tower Harratz on Bristol's medieval Portwall; and the launch of the Monuments At Risk Survey (MARS). Broadcast statements by R Morris (CBA) and G Wainwright (EH) on local authority archaeology are also noted.
In touch with the past: Leicester Cathedral for the visually impaired
Ben Wallace
A report on an undergraduate project to develop an archaeological trail around the cathedral.
