Abstract: |
Reports on excavations undertaken in the 1960s in advance of quarrying on the promontory near Yatton and the Cadbury Congresbury hillfort, Somerset. `The place-name' is discussed by Margaret Gelling (9). The earliest finds were Neolithic flints, although there were no associated features. Iron Age finds included brooches, a Dobunnic coin, and probably a bronze figurine. Religious activity may have taken place before a Romano-Celtic temple was established. A subsequent cemetery was used from the fifth to seventh century (according to radiocarbon dates). The most significant finds are thought to have been copper alloy octagonal finger-rings and a `leaf', a fragmentary stone inscription, and animal bone deposits -- but pottery (RB), stone objects, ironwork, and building materials were also found. The specialist reports (excluding those presented on microfiche only) include: `Flint' by Anne Everton (77); `The brooches' by Sarnia Butcher (79--82 & 83) (including a note by Elizabeth Fowler (82)); `Personal: military dress' (84) and `Finger rings' (84--5 & microfiche) both by Martin Henig; `Glass Beads' by Dorothy Charlesworth (85--7); `The coins' by Richard Reece & Lorna Watts (94--5 & microfiche); `The samian ware' by Brenda Dickinson (102); `The mortaria' by Kay Hartley (103); and `The bronze figurine' by Martin Henig (131 & 133). |
