Abstract: |
Brings together all the known information on the town defences and defended area, with full accounts of the excavations at the Gateway supermarket site (1985--86) and Gas House Lane (1988--89) -- see also 95/1150 & 95/1174. Specialists' reports include sections on microfiche. The supermarket site revealed two defensive lines (third and fourth century, respectively), the later one built over a stone `granary'. Finds from this sites are examined in `Samian ware' by Margaret (Bulmer) Ward (19); `Roman pottery' by Rowan Ferguson (20--31); `Medieval pottery' by Stephanie Ratkai (31--2); metalwork, including `Copper alloy and lead' by G Lloyd-Morgan (33), `Iron' by Quita Mould (33--4) and `Coins' by W A Seaby (34). Bones include `Human bone' by Ann Stirland (34), `animal bone' by Julie Hamilton (34). Ecological remains comprise: `Charred plant remains' by Lisa Moffett (35 &); `Snails' by Beverley Meddens (35 & ); `Waterlogged plant remains' by James Greig (35); `Soil analysis' by Matthew Canti (35--6). `Glass & shale' is by Denise Allen (36). Steve Cracknell (36--41) concludes with a `Discussion' of the site. At Gas House Lane, the third-century defences and several timber and timber-and-stone buildings were found, but only part of the later wall was exposed. A medieval drying kiln and tanning pit were also examined and the kiln has been reconstructed on a nearby site. Finds reports include: `Roman pottery' by Jeremy Evans (58--97), with `Samian ware' by Margaret (Bulmer) Ward (44--77); `Post-Roman pottery' by Stephanie Ratkai (97--100); `Stone building materials' (100) and `Ceramic and stone tile' (100--2) both by Lorraine Webb (100); `Mortar and plaster' by Graham Morgan (102); `Burnt daub' by Lorraine Webb (102); metalwork, including `Copper alloy' (102--4) and `Lead objects' (104) by Glenys Lloyd-Morgan; `Iron objects' by Quita Mould (104--9). Bone comprises `Worked bone' by Glenys Lloyd-Morgan (109--11); `Human bone' by Christine Osborne (111); `Animal bone' by Julie Hamilton (111--12). Ecological remains are covered in `Charred plant remains' by Lisa Moffett (112--14) and `Plant remains from Trench A' by James Greig (114--15). `Roman glass' is by Denise Allen (115--18) and `Stone objects' are by Lorraine Webb (119--20). The findings from these two sites are then brought together with other evidence in a section that includes: `Davis Collection and other unpublished pottery from the defended area of the town' (125--6) and `Ceramic evidence for the occupation of the defended area' (126) both by Jeremy Evans; `Animal bone' by Julie Hamilton (126--7); and a `Discussion' by Stephen Cracknell (127--40). |
