Abstract: A more detailed report on the project than that published in 1979, with the addition of specialist studies of the findings. An account of the historical background is followed a phase-by-phase description of the twelfth and thirteenth century occupation and the development of the hospital from c 1234 to its closure and subsequent use in the post-medieval period. `Pottery' (136--56) and ceramic `Roof furniture' (156--7) are by Michael Ponsford; `Floor tiles' is by Bruce Williams (157--9); `Clay tobacco pipes' is by Reg Jackson & Roger Price (159--62). A section on other finds comprises an `Introduction' (163--4), `Glass' (164), `stone' (164--6 & 167), `copper ally' (166 & 168--9), `Iron' (171--2), `worked bone' (172--3), `Leather' (173) and `Other materials' all by Les Good, with: `Architectural stonework' by John Bryant (173--4); `Coins and tokens' by David Dawson (174--5); `Human bone' by Gillian Stroud (175--81); `Animal bone' by Gerry Barber (181--93); radiocarbon dates for wood samples; and `Plant and insect remains' by Julie Jones (193--7).
